"Cookie Cutter Girl: Pop Superhero"
INTERVIEW for "ARTIST LAUNCH"
Premiere Issue! Release Date: 10/07
Let me take you to a world where girls rule the roost.
We’re talking a world pretty in pink, where comic book camaraderie thrives and guitars are played by the better sex - loud; very loud in fact.
Running the show in this anti-pantheistic pantomime is the inimitable Cookie Cutter Girl, princess of girl-pop and crime fighting alter-ego of Lynn Julian.
Born and raised in the heart of big-city Connecticut before transplanting to small-town Maine, Julian experienced more life than most in her formative years. I wonder if this inspired her music and stage persona.
“My inspiration? Finding my "Inner Superhero," of course! Cookie Cutter Girl, 21st century Pop Superhero, believes that everyone has an Inner Superhero and wants to help everyone ‘Stop what they are doing ... Look within themselves ... and listen to their hearts. You have the power ... I have the power... the GIRL POWER!’" explains Lynn.
I guess not. But this landscape of female empowerment
is driven by a deeper force.
“I fight for women's right to live their lives as they see fit, rather than within the narrow confines of the rules that society has laid out for ‘women.’ They can ‘break the mould’ and be whoever they want to be – professionally, personally, sexually ... the potential is limitless.”
And she wields her weapon like a musical lance. A heady mix
of rock and pop, suffused with catchy hooks and observant lyrics. Imagine
Pink jousting with Everclear under the influence of sodium pentathlon –
it’s pop, it’s punk and
it is unbridled in its honesty. Her eponymous debut album
as CCG is a paean to equal rights, performed with all the panache and gusto you’d associate with a woman comfortable with her inner superhero.
And it’s not all talk. The band uses their publicity to attract attention to women’s issues such as domestic violence and eating disorders, and have goals to distribute the CD to schools and crisis centers across the USA. Using the CCG mantra of “strength through unity”, Julian has touched the lives of many people who have found her orbit, from local musicians who sit in with her live shows, through to women who have taken her message to heart.
“We're all a single link, with limited power, but ...
united together, our strength has no bounds!”
This message has resounded around the national press. From
features in Rolling Stone, on MTV and FUSE TV,
to their very own comic book, the word is quickly spreading - and CCG has no intention of staying quiet.
